Real Madrid

Real Madrid's new coach Rafa Benitez complained of a lack of shooting accuracy among his players after his return to La Liga was spoiled by a 0-0 draw at promoted Sporting Gijon in their opening match of the campaign on Sunday.

Real had scores of chances at the Molinon against a team with a fraction of their resources but could not find a way past Gijon goalkeeper Ivan Cuellar, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Jese all drawing a blank.

James Rodriguez made little impact when he replaced Jese in the second half, while fullbacks Danilo and Marcelo were largely ineffective when they attacked down the wings.

"I knew it was going to be a match in which Sporting made things hard for us. There were a lot of shots but without precision and in the first half we allowed them to get into the game. We have to improve things, we have to work more. We were lacking the final pass and skill in our execution in attack." - Rafa Benitez

CAF Confederations Cup

Pirates, Zamalek advance in Confed
A 2-0 victory for Orlando Pirates over AC Leopards of Congo Brazzaville took the South African club and Zamalek of Egypt into the CAF Confederation Cup semifinals this weekend.

Title-holders Al Ahly of Egypt took a significant step toward joining them in the penultimate phase of the second-tier African Football Confederation (CAF) club competition by winning 1-0 at Esperance of Tunisia.

Former African champions Pirates and Zamalek were guaranteed last-four slots unless shock 2012 Confederation Cup winners Leopards triumphed at a rain-soaked Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
